Mount Shasta, CA (Map)
We started our string in fall of 2001. We have 4 wethers and an unbred doe, various ages, horns intact, all from Willow Witt breeders Ashland OR. We don't get out as much as we'd like; currently most of our trips are one-nighters off Pacific Crest Trail in Mt Eddy region near Mt. Shasta. We can advise on this area, which has excellent access to some good spots in summer and fall. Have had experiences with uncontrolled dogs, plant poisoning, wintering in snow area, hoof damage in wet corral, tie out vs portable electric corral, electric fences, stanchions, feeders, several types saddles and bags, etc, that we are glad to share. As I write this, a cougar is ! known to be in the neighborhood, hopefully I'll have nothing to add on that subject..... I also have a few thoughts on defensive weapons for goat packing if you're interested in that.

I have been into goat-packing for about a week (05-28-04)!! I just purchased two wethers last week from Rodney York and have two more on order. I ordered two saddles and panniers from Owyhee at the recommendation from Rodney. I did a ton of research and decided that packgoats are for me. I jumped into the deep end! My primary purpose is to hunt in the backcountry with them and also backpacking without the pack on my back. I look forward to sharing my adventures.

My goats and much of my gear were stolen in November, 2003, but I do have a saddle and pannier and other gear still. I'd love to go packing with someone who has an extra goat. Steve 707 822 1228

Redtail Ridge Oberhasli
Bonny Doon, CA (Map)*
My first Oberhasli was a wonderful wether I bottle raised and trained to harness in 1990. Read about Mr Zeb and our award winning Oberhasli breeding herd Redtail Ridge Oberhasli at: www.oberhasli.org/redtailridge In 1999, we imported Purebred Swiss Oberhasli semen to improve stature, toplines, feet and legs in the Oberhasli breeding stock here in America. If you think Oberhasli are too small, short, stocky and hocky...visit our farm and see the difference. Bottle raised kids. Our entire herd continually tests CAEV negative (WSU testing. No abscesses. Strict Herd health management. *Our pack wethers are all over the western states working hard for their people. Most our sales are by referral. Happy packing!
* Bonny Doon is located in the Santa Cruz mtns, northeast of Santa Cruz, CA. Unfortunately, all the online mapping links show this area incorrectly.

We and our 3 (almost 5-year-old) children love to go goatpacking, usually just on picnics around here, but also up to the Big Bear and Mammoth areas. It really helps to have them carry our stuff, as our backs need to be free to carry a tiring child occasionally. Our 5 packers are LaManchas, with more on the way, and we even have some Saanen/Alpines on the way this year!

We have been out on many hikes with our four yearling wethers, which we have had since they were a week old (except Bart...he was raised to weaning for us by Lightfoot Packgoats). The boys are wonderful and coming along nicely on the trail, including our LaMancha's first full out swim across a creek this spring! Really looking forward to the time when the boys can carry loads and we can really get out into the woods... Until then, always happy to meet others in our area and swap stories and/or walk the local trails on the beautiful BLM land we have here in No CA. Hope to hear from you!
These are my four boys and we are on BLM land in Shasta County called Jelly's Ferry just south of Anderson. The trail is called the Yana Trail. The river in the distance is the Sacramento and you can't see it, but directly east of us is Mt. Lassen.
2007 update: The boys are all four years old this spring. They run 175 to 240 or so. Plenty big enough to haul what I need. The last two years we loaded them lightly and got to see the Caribou Wilderness near Lassen Park, the Marble Mountains and spent some time with friends in the Tahoe area around Carr and Feeley Lakes. Looking forward to more this year!
